Empties: July 2017

Already Repurchased:
1. Naruko Tea Tree Night Gelly
2. make remake Cloud all in one Cleanser- I've read mixed reviews on this, not the best makeup remover for me but as a second cleanser, it works well. Made with plenty of grain extracts and the texture is quite unique.
3. Clarins Multi-Active Night Cream

Just recently discovered the Naruko Tea Tree Gelly and I have to say that I reaaaaallllyyyy like it! Ok scratch that, LOVE it. It really helps with minor blemishes (not sure about cystic) and also redness, I always wake with clear and calm skin. Also the scent is right up my alley, minty and herbaceous. Love!!

New-In: July 2017

So, what's new this month? They're all replacements for June's Empties, no new steps in my regime.

Clarins Multi-Active Skin Renewal Serum (discontinued, my last tube T_T)
Moroccan Oil Hair Treatment- this cute little bottle was part of the welcome giftbag at a close friend's wedding in Capri
Cow Brand Additive-Free Cleansing Oil
Scinic Snail All in one Ampoule
Teien Herb Garden Natural Body Soap- gifted for my birthday this year, I just love the geranium scent! I usually use a fresher or herby scent during the summer months and a sweeter, milkier scent when it's colder so this body wash is just perfect for the humid weather!

Not a fan of Summer, lost track of the new types of insects I've seen so far in Japan. Can't wait for it to be over.

Empties: June 2017

6 months have gone by, I don't really feel that it has been half a year already if not for doing these monthly posts. I mostly share my thoughts on beauty on Instagram (username: xxenn) these days but I also repost them here.

Already Repurchased:
1. Scinic Honey All in one Ampoule
2. Clarins Multi-Active Skin Renewal Serum

Note: I would repurchase the Innisfree Green Tea Scalp Scaler, however it's been discontinued.

New-In: June 2017

What's new in my beauty routine this month?

Lux Luminique Sakura Dream Shampoo & Conditioner (Spring Exclusive)
La Mer The Tonic
Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence
Naruko Lupin Anti-Wrinkle Firming Night Gelly
Swisspure x Le Petit Prince Foundation Pact

Hoping the Benton Snail Essence will be better than the Cosrx Snail Mucin Essence which just didn't do much after a few months.

Empties: May 2017

Came back to Japan with soooooo many beauty products, I managed to lug back 1 whole suitcase full and I have another coming when my family visits in October. Thank goodness for ANA's generous baggage allowance. 23kgs x 2 pieces of luggage per person and I even got to take over Y*'s space, total weight- 92 kilos! Thank you my love!

I have decided to self-impose a no-buy, I most definitely have enough skincare and bodycare to last me for a long time. Starting next month, I will be holding off all beauty purchases until end October (5 months!) cause that's when my family comes for the final part of #MrMrsKomai and we may or may not go shopping and also Y* and I will be heading on our honeymoon, so I forsee that there will be beauty purchases LOL.

Anyhow, on to May's Empties!

There is only 1 item which I've already repurchased- the Clarins Instant Eye Make-Up Remover. This has been my absolute favourite eye makeup remover for the longest time. Ive recently discovered a Japanese drugstore brand which performs just the same, if not better and for less than half the price. Would be switching out after I finish my backups but it's still an excellent product!

I also want to note that the novelty of the Kanebo Evita Rose Whip Soap ran out for me, whilst it wasn't a bad cleanser I just got bored of it and ended up using it as a body wash to speed up usage.

Eating Out: Marco Creative Cuisine

Came upon this new "casual fine-dine" restaurant in 1 Utama on the day it opened but didn't pay much attention. "Just another restaurant taking over", I thought. But over the next week I saw postings of their menu on Instagram and I was intrigued. Quickly made a reservation to check them out.

At MYR78 for "The Journey of Flavours", a 7-course (one of which is a drink) creative cuisine, it's quite a steal. Our whole table had the full menu but you can also opt for ala carte.
Palate Cleanser: Velvety Matcha-Lime Shooter

Appetizer: Savoury Eclair

Soup: Truffled Mushroom Soup

Entree: Chicken Liver Parfait

Main: Pomodoro Cream Seafood Pasta

Main: Squid Ink Japonica Rice
Main: Chicken Roulade with Brussels Sprouts
Main: Duck Breast with Orange Puree and Roasted Beetroot
Clockwise L-R Dessert & Drink: Raspberry Decadence, Deconstructed Lemon Meringue Pie,
Creme Brulee & Sparkling Iced Berry

Everything was so good! We were worried initially that the servings would be tiiiinnnyyy so we ordered an extra main to share. Which turned out to be unnecessary as the portions are substantial and a good size even for a large eater like myself. By the end of the meal, I couldn't move! I did't even need dinner that night.

Service was excellent as well, I never had to ask for my water to be topped up. The more experienced staff moved about very smoothly and the newer ones were a little nervous, shaky when serving but nothing to fault really. Pacing of the food was great, we didn't have to wait long for the next course once our meal started.

Each dish was good but the Chicken Roulade really surprised us because.. chicken. How do you make chicken into a fine-ish dish? But it came highly recommended so we ordered it as well. No doubt better than my duck (which was also good!).

Would definitely return, hopefully the level of service is still as good even after the first few "opening months".

Wedding Updates!

Almost everything is done! So far it has been quite enjoyable, the only little hiccup was the lady who was supposed to do up the table flowers for one of the ceremonies took weeks to give me her banking details for a deposit!!! Apart from that-I do enjoy DIY and crafting so I actually did up my own invites and even printed them myself. I also made some of the envelopes for the invitations given to Y*'s family as the ones I ordered were being sent to KL. So far, so good!

I've come to realize a wedding budget can be as big or as small as you want it to be. I have been given the luxury of not having to work whilst planning the 3 parts of our wedding (2 in KL and 1 in Japan) so I was able to do a lot of the sourcing myself. Some couples may prefer to have a wedding planner handle everything for them but I knew from the start I didn't want nor need one. Partly because our celebration was going to be really small (60 pax and 33 pax),  and also because I do enjoy planning parties and events. Plus, it's going to be a really simple event, nothing elaborate, pretty confident I can pull it off.

My dress is already done and fitted, and OMG I LOVE my dress. It has all the elements that I love, and I can't wait until Y* sees me in it. He's been so anxious to catch a glimpse of my dress. But no, he shall have to wait until the day itself. My mother, who initially had her concerns about my dress when I pictured it to her- too this, too that, saw me at my first fitting and was in awe. My dressmaker is so good!! Am making a second dress with her for the Chinese Tea Ceremony.

All weddings come with their fair share of drama and mine is no different. There will always be that one person with a snide comment or nitpicking on things. But to be honest, not bothered at all! I'm more excited than anything!!

Can't wait for Part 1 and 2 of #MrMrsKomai!!

New-In: April 2017

New products joining my beauty line-up in April and also additional steps in my routine. I've used hair oils on and off but I've decided to be consistent with it as my hair is really long and needs all the TLC it can get. I also decided to add a Vitamin C serum as well as eye patches for targeted treatment of fine lines.

Most of the items here were either gifted by my sister or gifts with purchase. I only paid for 4 of them. I'm liking everything so far!

Kerastase Elixir Ultime
The Odbo Hydro-Gel Eye Patch
La Mer The Perfecting Treatment
La Mer The Cleansing Gel
Alpha-H Liquid Gold Smoothing & Perfecting Mask
Clarins Super Restorative Total Eye Concentrate
Cosrx Snail 92 All in one Cream
C20 Vitamin Serum
Son & Park Beauty Water
Pure Smile Snail Hair Treatment

Empties: March 2017

I haven't been using makeup on a daily basis since mid last year and it's becoming even harder to finish or even hit pan on makeup items. Will try harder for next month!

Will just be listing down what I've already and also those which I plan to repurchase in the future.

Already Repurchased:
1. The Saem Snail Soothing Gel (sorry still no review, this is my super love!!!!)
2. Clarins Renew-Plus Body Serum
3. Clarins Contour Body Oil
4. Clarins Blue Orchid Face Oil

Planning to Repurchase (when I run out of a replacement):
1. Caudalie Grape Water
2. Naturie Skin Conditioning Gel
3. Fujiko Mayu Tint in Chocolat Brown

There wasn't any bad product in this lot, just that I decided not to repurchase some as I've plenty of replacements in my stash and they weren't exceptionally good. The Cosrx Centella Blemish Ampoule was handed over by my sister, I finished it within 2 weeks but I can't attest to the blemish fighting properties as my skin isn't problematic at the moment. It did however leave my skin smooth and I could apply other serums on top without any issues.

Wedding in about a month! Getting so excited yet nervous at the same time!!!

Of Lips & Mists

New lip products, most of them were actually bought pre-Christmas 2016 and sent to my address in KL. Now that I'm back, I can finally open the parcels. Can't resist the wine packaging from Labiotte, so great that they use wine pigments and skin/lipcare benefits in their products too.

I've been so good (or bad?) with Chanel, in the past year and to date I've only picked up 2 lippies, a bronzer and 3 nail polishes. Been rather underwhelmed with their collection lately. Had a look at the upcoming Summer/Cruise beauty collection and nothing caught my eye. Been more interested in Coloupop lately LOL.

Also getting back into the habit of using a mist regularly. The esfolio Aloe Vera, Caudalie Grape Water and Pruvivi Organic Squalane Mist are already open. The rest are waiting in line to be used. Still have quite a number of products unphotographed but I've decided to just include them in the monthly "New-In" posts when I start to use the products.

The Son & Park has been on my beauty radar for a long while, I grabbed mine from Althea when they were having a 1+1 promo, same with the Whamisa Damask Rose Petal Mist. Such a good deal!

White Day in Japan

My first White Day celebration in Japan! Well, technically I'm not in Japan at the moment, I flew back to KL a few days ago (to start planning for our wedding!!). So Y* said I could open my gifts which were given by him and his boss and colleague before I left.

Everything is so pretty! And the truffles were sooo gooooodd! Especially the Speculoos flavoured one. It was a box of 18 and we errr polished it within 3 days. Valentine's and White Day in Japan is like a trap for consumers who can't resist packaging and chocolate. I found it so hard to resist the aisle and aisles of chocolate the few weeks leading to this day.

Not a fan of chocolate pastries and cakes but chocolate by itself, in a drink or mousse form- I love!

Thank you for the gifts!! I can forsee myself collecting more tins/boxes in the coming years LOL.

Review: JOLSE HaruHaru Sheet Mask

I recently received a bunch of HaruHaru masks from Jolse to review. These masks contain Mayu (horse oil) and come in 4 variants- Soothing, Moisture, Lifting and Vitality.

The illustration has a touch of dark humour which I find funny- the Soothing mask shows a lady catching her lover with another woman and the Moisture mask features the same lady (?) dunking a guy's head into water for some hydration.

All the masks in the Haruharu line contain fermented horse fat, I tried the Soothing Mask first as I was experiencing skin redness from the cold winter. The scent reminded me of eucalyptus although it's not listed as one of the ingredients. It did help with my rosacea but I noticed tiny red bumps (which disappeared n the morning). There was a slight residue leftover after removing the masks which took a while to absorb, but once it did- supple skin!

I kept the masks on for 30 mins each night, and although they can be used nightly I would not recommend doing that for someone with combination skin as it might be too much. Drier skins would love it in my opinion.

On the second night, I went with the Moisture Mask. Main ingredients of the include Blueberry Extract, Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide and Mayu. This has a scent which I can't quite figure out, but it isn't offensive. As with the first mask, I was also left with supple skin and the same residue which took a while to absorb.

I wanted to continue for the 3rd night with another Haruharu mask but I had noticed little red bumps which weren't going away overnight. So I skipped it for one night and used it after my skin had calmed down. The Vitality mask showed the least improvement on my skin, perhaps it's because I've been getting enough sleep and rest so this might perform better on someone with dull skin or lacking sleep. It also contains Niacinamide and quite a number of different plant root extracts.

The last of the series is the Lifting mask, which I used on the next night. This has Aloe, Rose Water, Centella Asiatica and a number of fruit extracts. My face seemed a little more defined but nothing drastic. I also noticed a red bump on my cheek and this also leaves the same sheen which takes a while to absorb. I wore all of these masks for 30-40 minutes each.

After using these masks nightly, stopping and starting again, I am quite sure that my skin can't handle so much Mayu on a daily basis. However, it is a great mask for those with drier skins or during winter when our skin needs more hydration.

Thank you Jolse for sending over these masks for me to try out!

New In: February 2017

Sakura season is looming, and many beauty brands are pushing out sakura themed products- either in terms of packaging or using the actual flower as an ingredient.

Such a pretty lot from last month's purchases. It's a coincidence that everything I picked up is pink.

Lux Luminique Sakura Dream is a limited edition only sold during this season, I enjoy using the Luminique range and the scent is quite nice so I bought it.
Canmake Transparent Finish Powder TL a lavender powder which I will be using to set my makeup during Part 1 of #MrMrsKomai (yes that's the hashtag we will be using!) and yes, I will be doing my own makeup too.
Cow brand Additive Free Cleansing Oil, I'm down to 1 unopened cleansing oil in my stash so I figured a backup is needed. Not really fussed with my cleansing oils, as long as they do the job well, affordable and is ok for sensitive skin, I'm happy to try it out.
DUP x Rola Eyelashes Fixer EX, as mentioned above I will be doing my own makeup so I picked up a bottle of eyelash glue. This has the "Cosme Award" sticker so it should be good. Pretty packaging! *buys them all*

The month of March will be a no-buy, except for masks which I use on a daily basis for #100daysofmasks. Check out my Instagram(xxenn) to see what what masks I've been using daily leading to my big day.

Empties: February 2017

Didn't manage to finish anything in January, so skipped straight to February. Haven't been finishing any makeup items lately so I was quite excited to hit pan and also throw out some very old lippies. There's even an item contributed by Y*!

Already have backups of the following:
Clarins Instant Eye Make-Up Remover
ClarinsMen Revitalizing Gel (for Y*)

I would consider repurchasing:
Moist, Diane Oil in Body Milk (review here)
Shiseido Fino Premium Touch

I also managed to finish up/hit pan/disposed of the following beauty items:
Isa Knox x Bambi Micro Foam Cushion Silk Cover- not bad! I still have a refill.
Sportsgirl Lipsticks in Bombshell and Fuschia Splash
Maybelline Lipstick/Gloss
Chanel Bronze Corail bronzer- I've hit pan!! Let's see how long it will take to finish it.

The 3 lip colours were thrown out because I finally found replacements, they are actually VERY VERY old but I kept them around to match with potential dupes.

That's all for February, aiming to live a more simplistic and hoard-free beauty life this year!

Current Bathroom Products

Almost halfway through my current haircare and bodycare, they are all yellow and contain honey as an ingredient. I gravitate towards all honey products- skincare, lipcare, bath products, scents.. and yes, I also love eating honey. My favourite is Acacia honey, I like the light floral taste and it tastes so good in warm milk.

I picked up the Ahalo Butter Honey Milk Body Wash because 1) I like using warm, milky, slightly sweet scents in Winter, and 2) Honey and Milk are known to be moisturizing ingredients and I sure do need a boost of that in the colder months. I really liked the scent and one pump is all I need for a wash but unfortunately it wasn't as moisturizing as I had hoped. My forearms are always left feeling a littleeee bit tight after each shower but nothing a little moisturizer can't fix. Would be better for other seasons I suppose.

At one point I was drawn to Alice everything, I even picked up a BB cushion in her silhouette, and when I saw this Kao Essential Rich Damage Care set with a shampoo and conditioner, I just grabbed it without thinking or even reading the ingredients. I just figured Rich Damage Care would be great for Winter and great for my long hair. Turns out this range is formulated with highly concentrated Honey, Royal Jelly Extract and Protein. It has a light fruity floral scent which is alright and performance wise- it didn't weigh my hair down nor made it greasy but I still prefer the Lux Luminique range. Somehow my hair feels more "airy" using that and I really like it.

Am also using the Lebel IAU Hair Mask which I reviewed earlier but is not pictured. No repurchases from this season's picks and you can read about my previous bathroom products here

Recipe: Easy Yee Sang

Yee Sang or also known as Yu Sang, Yu Sheng, I've made this more than 5 times since I prepared it for the Lunar New Year, albeit with lesser ingredients. It's so easy and healthy too, there are plenty of recipes online but mine is with what I could find in my local supermarket in Japan.

Ingredients:
Shredded daikon (white radish)
Shredded kyuri (cucumber)
Shredded ninjin (carrot)
Kombu (sea kelp)
Beni shouga (pickled shredded ginger)
Crushed peanuts
Sesame seeds
Wanton skin (cut into 1x1cm and fried)
Raw fish of your choice

Sauce:
Japanese ume dressing (I picked the zero oil version)
Honey

1. Assemble shredded vegetables, raw fish and condiments as you wish.
2. Mix the ume dressing with a few squirts of honey to sweeten and thicken the sauce.
3. Pour sauce over the Yee Sang and toss!

Super easy and tasty! I sometimes make it with just daikon, carrot, beni shouga, peanuts, sesame seeds and the sauce. Just had it for dinner yesterday and I can't get enough of it just yet.

Enjoy!

Valentine's Day in Japan

I've shared this on my Instagram post and I'll share it again; I believe that Love should be expressed whenever possible to all whom we hold dear- family, partner, and friends, not just today.

In Japan, Valentine's Day seems to be all about the guys- they get the chocolates whilst the girls wait until March 14 (a month later) to see if the guy reciprocates. In mid-January I had already started to see displays of different chocolates in-stores, they were all packaged so beautifully and they had different price-ranges so you could definitely find something for the guy(s) in your life or even yourself.

I say "guys" because in Japan, it is common to give out giri-choco which is chocolate which has no romantic feelings attached, more like a thank you, and given to all or most guys which you know or work with. Honmei-choco is usually handmade (with love) and given to a lover or spouse.

This year, I bought giri-choco for Y*'s boss and also workmate. I had a hard time picking from the vast selection and everything was packaged so nicely. In the end, I went with a sake assortment of chocolates for his boss and a box of cat shaped chocolates for his co-worker. It was so cute!

The weeks leading up Valentine's Day, I didn't buy anymore chocolates nor did I mention anything about it, but little did Y* know I had already bought the ingredients to make him a little something. To throw him off, I pretended to browse the chocolate aisle and then never picked anything up.

On the morning itself, Y* admitted that he was delighted when he saw me reach into the *hidden spot* to retrieve his box of sweets in the morning. He said he would've been a little upset if I had not given him anything, seeing that I did get his boss and co-workers gifts. How could I forget you, my love!

Dinner was Spaghetti Bolognese with the best garlic bread I've made (a friend shared her recipe with me), followed by Nutella & toasted marshmallow on toast.

This is our first of many Valentine's Day together, last year whilst we were still doing long distance, I sent him a box of goodies.

Thank you for being so easy to love, my forever Valentine.

FOTD: Peachy

Now that I'm fun-employed, I rarely use makeup during the weekdays. So on weekends when we go out for dates, I'm trying to make it a point to play with some colours.

I do have a fair bit of eyeshadows but I never seem to touch them. I much prefer textures which work well with fingers as I'm very basic when it comes to eyeshadow application on my monolids. The maximum I would use is 2-3 colours. But most days I just use 1. Today I decided I wanted to go with a peachy look, heres what I used:

Face: Isa Knox x Bambi Cushion Compact
Eyeshadow: 3rd colour from Swisspure x Le Petit Prince Palette
Eyeliner: Maybelline Gel Liner
Eyebrows: Kate
Blusher: Tarte Sweet
Highlighter: Colourpop Lunch Money
Lips: *forgot to use a product*

Am really happy with my skin lately, the moles on my face were always covered with high coverage foundation in the past but now that my skin is better, I don't need to cover up as much. Even my sister thought I drew my moles on (there's a matching one on the other cheek). Still contemplating sharing my acne journey, looking back at those photos I took at the height of my breakouts still shocks me.

Anyhow! Will post more of these "looks" so I don't forget which colours I used to create them.

Review: Moist, Diane Oil in Body Milk (Chardonnay)

The first product I tried from this brand was the Extra Damage Repair Hair Mask which I loved and subsequently got my sister hooked onto it too. It was the best drugstore hair mask I used when I was living in Kuala Lumpur, lovely scent and left my long hair soft but not weighed down. Unfortunately they only carried the haircare line so I made it a point to check out their bodycare products when I travelled to Japan.

Now that I live in Japan, I'm spoilt for choice and have yet to repurchase that much loved Hair Mask! Mainly because there are so many choices here, and there are some really affordable options which I plan on checking out. I did however get my hands on some of the Moist, Diane bodycare products- one of which is the Oil in Body Milk, Chardonnay scented.

The formula contains a rich combination of 14 skin-friendly botanical oils with hydrating beauty ingredients. These include Virgin Argan Oil, Virgin Plum Oil, Rose Hip Oil, Marula Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Baobab Oil, Shea Butter, Rose Honey, Acerola Extract and Pearl Protein Extract amongst other beneficial oils. No artifical colouring, alcohol, silicon or animal-derivatives in here.

Despite the scent being named Chardonnay, it doesn't smell anything like wine, but more of a light muscat which I adore! It's so pleasing and soft. Even Y* comments how nice the fragrance is whenever I use it. I have been using this since last winter (I have another body lotion for warmer months) and am almost done. It's kept in the bathroom so I don't forget to slap some on after I take a bath.

What I like:
Love love love the scent! Also the light texture and how it absorbs well in the cooler and colder months. Moisturizes without any sticky or tacky feeling plus contains lots of great oils and ingredients. The sturdy textured plastic bottle allows me to keep it in the bathroom without worrying about it slipping when wet.

What I don't like:
I can't use this in summer at all, it just makes my skin sticky and slimy, but could just be me. The brand is a little iffy, the body milk is made in Japan but the shower oil is made in Vietnam. I feel like I have to check everytime before I buy from them now. It is also a little hard to find in drugstores, I got mine whilst visiting Hakata (Fukuoka) and have yet to see any whenever I pop by my local drugstore or even when I visit Tokyo. However, they do have links to online stores like Rakuten or Amazon Japan.

Price:
A little less than ¥1,000 for 250ml

Repurchase?
Yes! When I get through my large box of bodycare products...

Wonect Beauty Review: Bifesta Eye Makeup Remover

This product marks the final review in my Wonect Starlet journey, I would like to say thank you to the Wonect Team for giving me this opportunity. I have discovered many new products in the past few months, and have enjoyed receiving the notes which come with each month's package. It has been a great experience for me. Once again, thank you Roger and Harumi for your support!

So let's get to it! The Bifesta Eye Makeup Remover comes in a 145ml sturdy bottle and has been ranked number 1 in Cosme's Best Cosmetics list in the past.

It's a bi-phase eye makeup remover, which means there's a layer of oil and water which you have to shake before using. I find that bi-phase removers work so much better compared to water-based ones especially if you use waterproof or long-lasting eye makeup. I have been using bi-phase removers for many years as it takes off my eye makeup easier and faster.

After I removed the wrapper, I realized that the water part isn't actually blue but also clear like the oil part, but you can still see where they meet. The 2 layers work together to remove eye makeup quickly without rubbing or tugging- the water-based layer contains skin lotion-derived cleansing ingredients and the oil-based emollient layer sort of binds and slides off waterproof mascara and eyeliner. These ingredients include Vitamin B and E derivatives, Hyaluronic Acid, and are gentle on the eye area and eyelashes, protecting them and keeping the skin moisturized. The formula is also low-irritant, fragrance-free, colorant-free and preservative-free.

Here's how it looks when shaken- a cloudy mixture which you then pour out onto a cotton pad. The mouth is the perfect size, doesn't dispense too much nor too little when you tilt the bottle. I usually use my eye makeup remover to remove my lipstick as well, so I have included swatches of a normal lipstick as well as a non-transfer matte liquid lipstick below.

Top to bottom- Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner (it is waterproof, smudge-proof and really hard to remove), a matte eyeshadow, a glittery eyeshadow, lipstick and a matte non-transfer liquid lipstick.

Used one cotton pad with a few drops of the remover, the results above are with just one swipe! Everything came off so easily without any tugging on the skin, which is very important as the eye area is so thin and delicate.

All clean! Except for a little staining left behind by the liquid lipstick which nothing takes off anyway. If you're using it on your lips just remember not to lick them before giving them a wash. I did not detect any scent, and when used on my eyes it did not cloud my vision nor cause any stinging or irritation. I also used it on waterproof mascara and it took that off very easily. For stubborn and reallllly long-lasting makeup, just leave the soaked cotton pad on for about 5-10 seconds before swiping.

All in, one of the best eye (and lip) makeup removers that I've tried and which performs just as well as my favourite Clarins Eye Makeup Remover! Would highly recommend!
